Last week: Governor Scott vetoed a second family law bill presented to him. The bill provided for an end to permanent alimony, created a formula for calculating periodic alimony and established a presumption of equal time sharing of children in divorces. The veto was misguided, although the decision by the legislature to merge the alimony and time sharing issues was wrong. Permanent alimony is onerous, it penalizes a spouse who provided during the marriage and forces that person to continue to provide for an ex who has no incentive to become self sufficient.
